A SafeBook for Schools

As I mentioned in an earlier blog, the Green California Schools Summit in Pasenda earlier this month saw the Zonbu take center stage as a new and exciting alternative to the traditional school PC. Also on display at the event was the 'SafeBook' from thin client specialist Devon IT. Powered by the VIA C7-M, the SafeBook is a mobile thin client that also aims to offer schools a much more rational alternative to the regular PC. My buddy Sascha from EPIA Center produced this video of the Safe Book at the summit.

Here are the system specs for those of you who are that way inclined.
  • CPU: 1.5GHz VIA C7-M
  • Graphics:
    • 2.1-inch XGA (1024x768) TFT LCD display
    • VGA port for external monitor
  • Networking:
    • built-in 802.11 a/b/g WiFi (internal mini-PCI slot)
    • 3G aircards supported via PCMCIA
    • 10/100 Ethernet port
  • 3 x USB 2.0 ports
  • Audio line out/mic in
  • Expansion
    • PCMCIA Type II slot
  • PXE boot capability
  • Size
    • 11.1 x 9.7 x 1.1 inches (283 x 245 x 32.7 mm)
  • Weight
    • 4 lbs., with 6-cell battery
  • Power
    • 20-Volt, 3-amp power supply
The SafeBook is immune to viruses, spyware, and hijacks, and its battery lasts for over 6 hours. This lightweight, super fast notebook has no hard drive and thus can be seen as a mobile version of a thin or connected client . Your data is stored on a central server which means it can never be stolen, lost or corrupted. Students can simply log on to the server and continue where they left off last time with the same settings and configuration that they used in the last session.

The SafeBook From Devon IT

The advantages of this kind of server-client based infrastructure include a more robust PC (no hard drive to break), increased mobilty (it's lighter) and a more cost effective system that is far easier to manage and maintain.
