If you look up the word Embedded in a dictionary you'll find the definition given as being something like - 'enclosed firmly in a surrounding mass'. Which is pretty accurate, as embedded devices now control much of our lives and surround our every waking moment. We, or at least our lives, therefore are the surrounding mass which these devices are firmly enclosed in. I'm talking ATM machines (ala Tranax), shop cash registers, signage systems, kiosks, ticket machines, subway trains, and just about everything that's electronic and controlled by a computer - which is a lot of stuff.
Embedded World and Digital Signage Expo are two big events that attract people from all over the globe to Nuremberg and Las Vegas respectively. The embedded industry, though being a somewhat hidden, almost covert bunch is bigger than most people would have you believe - Embedded World in Germany hosted 590 companies from 29 countries in 2007.
The Embedded World Exhibition and Conference started a few days ago and will continue throughout today and tomorrow, while Digital Signage Expo starts tomorrow and ends on Thursday. VIA will of course be in attendance to show off our latest and greatest embedded products and systems and to be honest, I wish I was going. I'd love to be in the hub of this almost furtive, hidden world. Nevermind, maybe next year.
