Being green to be seen, or being seen to be green?
The Zonbu rates it's Zonbu PC as a green machine and the company tells us that being green doesn't have to make you blue. In truth, hearing about 'Green' is starting to make me blue.
I'm sure most people are well aware of the Earth's impending doom. That we'll soon be living in a Dunesque world were nothing grows and water becomes the worlds most valuable commodity. Even if you've never read Frank Herbert, never seen Al Gore on a stage with a Power Point slide and have no clue what tree I'm barking up, you will, I'm sure, be aware that the Earth is sick. It has a sick biosphere and we humans are to blame.
What can one do? Should we recycle our own gases and use the reclaimed energy to fuel our household appliances? Wish we could. I bet I could power a small community after a night on the Guiness. Alas, unfortunatly no. We can but only dream.
We can recycle stuff and remember to turn stuff off when we're not using them, blah blah blah (cue snore..). So shouldn't we really just focus on using less power in general? Can we not now develop stuff that simply uses far less power? We are beginning too see more power efficient refrigerators, air conditioners, microwaves etc but what about hairdryers, alarm clocks, power tools and just about every other kind of elctrical appliance? They all suck juice and they are all mature technologies that were developed way back when the cost of juice was not an issue, financially or environmentally. It is an issue now. Ask Al how it is. He'll tell you straight.
The humble PC has come along way since its first inception. Now, in the west at least, PCs are indispensible. So many of us use the internet in our day jobs, type using productivity software, listen to mp3s not cds, call our mother on Skype, and a kazillion other things that require a PC. We can't live our meaningless lives without a PC and an internet connection. No way. Never.
Where is this going? Well. It's got to the point now where the humble PC uses almost as much power as any other appliance. And we often need to have it turned on 24/7.
What can I do that'll give me a guilt-free user experience without turning me into a complete eco-warrior nutcase. I'm all for reducing my monthly power bill but I need to 'compute' all day, everyday without that guilty feeling that I'm killing my planet.
"Me? Me killing my planet? No way. I have to do better."
And then God created Zonbu.
Or at least Gregoire Gentil did.

Zonbu apparently uses only 15 watts on average.
The materials they use to build it are RhOS compliant.
They'll recycle it for me when it dies.
Is this the answer to our prayers?
Can Zonbu save the planet?
In the coming weeks I'll be exploring eco-friendly alternatives like Zonbu in an attempt to fathom whether or not we really are doomed.
