I just came across this article on campustechnology.com, a site aimed at 'campus IT decision makers'. Based on a piece called "Using Thin Client Technology to Offset Costs in a Demanding University Environment." , it highlights the benefits of thin clients in universities. A thin client is basically a diskless or hard drive-less PC that connects to a network for all its data storage needs. The benefits of thin client computing were discussed in an earlier blog article I wrote and reappear here in the context of a university campus. Similar to any large institution, a university is tailor-made for a thin client infrastructure. Students can park themselves at any client PC and surf the web or do their homework without fear of ever losing their data, while IT costs are are massively reduced and down time almost no-existent.
To quote the author, Mr Bob Blair "Incorporating thin client technology into the campus network infrastructure can help to increase the available technology without increasing costs".
