VIA NAS 7800
VIA today announced the VIA NAS 7800 board for developers of Thin Server and NAS systems. Network Attached Storage and Thin Servers in general are becoming more and more common in the small to medium sized business space, in part due to rising fuel costs. Running a full server can be quite a job and many businesses require a whole room full of servers to keep the office humming away. Humming is an accurate description because most server rooms are fairly noisy places. Heat requires cooling and cooling creates noise.

The rise of the Thin Server and particularly NAS systems is tied to smaller business and even home users who are looking for a simple way to securely store and back up their data. NAS systems in are less expensive than servers, partly because they don't require much in the way of heavy computing power and partly because you need no monitor or peripherals, as a NAS simply connects to the network and can be controlled by a client PC through a browser or software application.

As with all VIA's segment boards, the VIA NAS 7800 is available only to system developers. The VIA NAS 7800 uses a low heat, power-efficient VIA C7 processor, supports up to 8 S-ATA drives and uses two Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect to the network. The form factor of the board is also quite special, in that it is designed to fit snuggly into a regular drive bay so system designers can install the NAS 7800 in a regular drive bay of a regular chassis, leaving more room for all those hard drives.

Here is short video I made.
