Data Theft Hit New Heights in 2007 - Bring On the Clients
Written by Stew

Data ThiefWelcome to 2008. The celebrations are over, the turkey is finally finished off. So I sat and reflected on what a year 2007 had been, and it appears I wasn't alone. In the last few weeks I'm sure you've seen plenty of 2007 reviews. One article that caught my eye had a rather negative tale to tell, and one that I fear will still be with us in 2008. 2007 saw more data stolen or lost than ever before. This may not come as a surprise, after all we have more data as people than ever before and most of us are still coming to grips with storing and securing it. Wired News found that businesses and corporations are still at threat and that the threat is growing.

The gPC In Context
Written by Stew
Friday, 28 December 2007
The Everex gPCThe gPC is back in wal-Mart and selling like hot-cross buns but not every one is impressed with Everex's new cloud computer. PC Mag published this review earlier this month and it was far from complimentary. Having used the gOS here in the office for a while I have to say that I disagree with the stance taken by Mr Domingo, and it would seem from the comments of engadget that I'm not alone. I don't want to openly attack the review itself but would like to simply offer an alternative perspective.

5 Cheers for Secure Thin Clients
Written by Stew
Thursday, 27 December 2007
A Thin Client form HPI came across this article the other day (while munching a turkey sandwich), touting the benefits of thin client computing or connected computing as we here a VIA prefer to say. In this article Mr Strassman outlines 5 key reasons why connected clients are the only rational choice for the business sector. These 5 reasons are centered around the issue of security. In a business where most users are not power users and therefore do not need a fat client to get their job done( i.e. use no heavy video or image processing software), Mr Strassman can see no better option than that of a thinner, client-server based infrastructure - for security reasons of course. Not for money, or the environment, or because they're quieter and take up less space. Purely from the perspective of security.

As a a former technology executive at General Foods, Kraft, Xerox, the Department of Defense and NASA, I bet he knows a thing or two about security. So listen up.

Here it is again, in case you missed it.

A CloudBook for 2008
Written by Stew
Friday, 21 December 2007
Everex CloudBookThe UMPC space is hotting up and branching out. With new and varied designs for a full x86 PC that can fit in your bag, bringing about designs of all shapes and sizes, the question for me has always been about usability. The NanoBook is the one that I thought fit the bill best with its full keyboard and longer battery life. Take look at the Packard Bell version, the Easynote XS20-006. Cool potatoes if you ask me. Now Everex have taken the VIA NanoBook reference design and added a wee bit of a twist. Similar to their gPC, both mobile and desktop, they have equipped the NanoBook with gOS, an Open-Source operating system that is purpose-built for cloud computing. Thus, the CloudBook is born.

Zonbu Power Draw Video
Written by Stew

Watts UpMy buddy over on The Green Lounge, Mr Ben Hall, recently produced a video using his new favourite toy - A 'Watts Up' power meter. The Green Lounge, as the title might suggest, is a blog that focuses on green issues, particularly those issues related the ever growing subject of environmentally responsible technology. As I've mentioned before, VIA's micro-processors are currently the most fuel-efficient around and have been chosen by numerous manufacturers for exactly this reason. However, the proof of the pudding is in the thorough testing. Not to mention the graphs. Here is the video of Ben 'Watts up'ing the fanless VIA Eden-based Zonbu.

A SafeBook for Schools
Written by Stew
Tuesday, 18 December 2007
As I mentioned in an earlier blog, the Green California Schools Summit in Pasenda earlier this month saw the Zonbu take center stage as a new and exciting alternative to the traditional school PC. Also on display at the event was the 'SafeBook' from thin client specialist Devon IT. Powered by the VIA C7-M, the SafeBook is a mobile thin client that also aims to offer schools a much more rational alternative to the regular PC. My buddy Sascha from EPIA Center produced this video of the Safe Book at the summit.

Zonbu Nation - Part 3 - A Week Later
Written by Stew
Thursday, 13 December 2007
Zonbu Nation We're back with the third installment of our Zonbu adventure - Zonbu Nation Part 3. In this episode our two Zonbutants have had a hold of their Zonbus for a week or so and thus have had plenty of time to form some opinions about the world's smallest green machine. I asked them how they got along with the Zonbu's customized Linux-based operating system in the context of everyday mainstream computing.
