Everex, a Taiwan-based PC maker, this week announced the TC2502 gPC. Available at selected Wal-mart stores throughout the US, the gPC is a one of a new breed of home computers that looks to provide a cost-effective home PC with the emphasis on green. Contrary to many reports that this machine is the first incarnation of the much-touted Google PC, the ‘g’ in 'gPC' stands for ‘Green’ and not ‘Google’, although its Ubuntu-based gOS operating system is pre-loaded with Google applications. Easy to see where the confusion came from.
Based on a 1.5 GHz VIA C7 processor and packing 512MB of system memory, an 80GB hard drive, built-in Ethernet and a DVD / CD-RW combo drive, the gPC also comes complete with a keyboard, mouse and stereo speakers, but of course (at under $200 bucks) no monitor. The desktop sports links to various Google web-based applications like Google Docs, Gmail, Google News, Google Calendar etc and also Open Office, Xing movie player, Skype and an iTunes-like audio app called RhythmBox.

Aimed at the cost-conscious consumer who also has the environment at heart, the gPC from Everex is designed to offer consumers the chance to use a PC that was designed for and embraces the idea of web-based applications.
