VIA OpenBookA year ago this month VIA introduced the VIA NanoBook reference design, a small Mini-Note PC design that used the VIA C7-M processor and VIA VX700 unified chipset. The NanoBook reference design was picked up by a whole plethora of manufacturers including Packard Bell, Everex and MaxData.

Today VIA announced it's latest reference design, the VIA OpenBook Mini-Note. Using the VIA C7-M processor and the latest VIA VX800 unified chipset, the VIA OpenBook has a stylish outer body, weighs only 1kg and sports a larger 8.9" display that supports screen resolutions of up to 1024x600. The VIA VX800 uses the high performance VIA Chrome9™ 3D engine with DirectX 9.0 3D graphics and hardware acceleration for MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VC1 and DiVX .

Other features include a webcam with dual lenses; one facing the user for face-to-face video calls, the other facing the outer world for recording presentations or lectures. Connectivity includes WiMAX, HSDPA or EV-DO/W-CDMA 3G services as well as Bluetooth, AGPS and Ethernet.

One very interesting aspect of this launch is how VIA is attempting to offer greater design flexibility to manufacturers who can now access the VIA OpenBook CAD files directly from the OpenBook website to use in designing their own OpenBook-based products.
